But this is the best of the posthumous Nirvana releases, and perhaps their best record period. There have been releases by the band afterwards, mostly live performances and some unreleased music, however it has been scarce over the years (his estate is way better protected than those of other rock stars who met an untimely end like Jimi Hendrix and Prince). And it was the first major release by the band after Cobain's death, a last missive to both casual and hardcore fans of the band.
Nirvana Unplugged was filmed/recorded 6 months before Cobain's death by suicide on Apand released 7 months later, book-ending the tragic event. We will also never know for sure whether Cobain intended this performance as some kind of final performance, or whether this design choice was part of his macabre aesthetic. Whether this is true or whether it is the producer's flawed recollection adding to the mythology of Cobain will never be known.
